What is this wine?
Emrich-Schönleber is one of the great estates of the Nahe, Germany, celebrated for crystalline Rieslings from steep, slate- and quartzite-rich vineyards. Halgans is their dry “second wine” from the famed Halenberg vineyard, a Grosses Gewächs site. Fruit that doesn’t make it into the GG bottling is used here, delivering serious terroir character at a more approachable price.

Why get this wine?
This is insider German Riesling: essentially a baby-Halenberg GG, with the same pedigree and meticulous farming but offered earlier for drinking and at outstanding value. For fans of precise, mineral-driven Riesling, Halgans is a rare chance to experience a top Nahe vineyard without the premium GG price.

What does this wine taste like?
Dry, focused, and energetic, with lime, green apple, and stone fruit balanced by flinty minerality and herbal lift. The palate is taut and elegant, finishing long with citrus zest and stony grip.

When should you drink this wine?
Enjoyable now for its freshness, but it will evolve beautifully over the next 5–7 years. Pair with seafood, sushi, roast poultry, or spicy Asian dishes where acidity and minerality shine.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 91
"The 2024 Riesling Halgans trocken is named after the cranes that migrate across the region, enjoying the thermics over the vineyards. This was made from the younger vines of the Halenberg and Auf der Ley. Supple, fragrant citrus notes reference lime and bergamot. The palate is smooth, serene, light and gently creamy. The finish tapers back to lovely, pithy lemon and a lasting, salty freshness." -Anne Krebiehl, MW

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
