A true clos and true monopole hidden in the humble garden of the Lafarge domaine—92 points from a vintage that continues to reward patience. Michel Lafarge pioneered organic viticulture in Burgundy, and this walled vineyard produces wines of exceptional purity. At 26+ years, this 1998 has reached a state of silky, evolved complexity with tertiary notes of earth and dried flowers. A rare opportunity to experience mature Volnay from one of its greatest producers.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

BH 91
"Maturing but not yet fully mature aromas of mostly secondary red berry fruit, stone and earth are followed by intense, beautifully delineated and quite fine medium-bodied flavors that display fine depth and length. However the slight astringency that I noted when I first reviewed this from barrel is still present and it's not completely clear that it will completely disappear though I remain optimistic that it will continue to soften. I have extended my drinking window accordingly and if you're going to try a bottle now, I would strongly advise decanting it for 30 minutes or so first."

"Bright deep ruby-red. Very pure aromas of cherry, raspberry, licorice and flowers. Sharply defined and high-pitched on the palate, with pure, expressive red fruit flavors. Still rather tightly wound, owing to firm but ripe acidity. Finishes with ripe, fine tannins and lovely subtle persistence. Very elegant and distinctive Volnay." -Stephen Tanzer

Focus On: Burgundy

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
everything you need to know about Bourgogne is just a click away!
