Rkatsiteli is Georgia's great white grape, and this comes from a rare pink-skinned mutation of it, propagated by a handful of growers who realized the mutant made something worth bottling on its own. Fermented on the skins in buried clay qvevri, it lands in its own category: pink-amber, dry, and tannic in a way no white wine is. Andria Gvino is the family winery of George Wolski, whose ancestors were exiled from Poland to Georgia after the 1830s uprising and picked up Georgian winemaking for the household table along the way. George trained as an engineer, and it shows: the wine is made the ancient way, with organic fruit, whole skins, buried qvevri and nothing added, unfined and unfiltered, but it comes out precise and clean rather than rustic for its own sake. Serve it cool rather than cold and treat it like a light red at the table.

More about Andria Gvino

Andria Gvino started when Alexander Wolski built a country house with a wine cellar in Khashmi back in 1984, making wine for family that just happened to be exceptional. Today George Wolski continues the tradition in the oldest way possible—8,000 years of Georgian technique, unfined and unfiltered, using Qvevri (those massive buried clay pots), organic grapes, no additives. Their expressions of Kisi and Krakhuna are some of the most moving amber wines in the world. This is old soul energy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Georgian classics if you can get them, khachapuri, khinkali and walnut-sauced pkhali or satsivi, plus grilled lamb kebabs, roast chicken with sumac, harissa-spiced vegetables and aged sheep's cheese.

Tasting Profile

Pink to amber in the glass, with dried apricot, orange peel, rose hip and warm spice. Dry, light to medium in body, with a fine drying tannin from the skins and bright acidity underneath. The finish is savory, with a little bitter grapefruit pith.
