The name means expressions, and it is literal: Quinta da Torre sits on eight distinct soil types, from sandy alluvial ground to granite, and Anselmo Mendes picks and keeps them separate at harvest rather than running everything across a sorting table, then blends them back together here. Mendes is the man most responsible for Vinho Verde's shift from spritzy and disposable to serious, having started experimenting with barrel-aged Alvarinho in 1987 and made the region's first skin-fermented whites in 2001. For this cuvee the fruit is destemmed but not crushed, gently pressed, and fermented in used 400-liter French oak, where it spends nine months on the lees with regular stirring before another two years in bottle ahead of release. Around 6,000 bottles were made. It is richer and more textural than the Alvarinho most people know, without losing the grape's citrus cut, and it wants a proper glass and cellar temperature rather than an ice bucket.

"The 2021 Expressões is an Alvarinho from their Quinta da Torre estate, a mixture of the eight different soils, the eight textures they have identified in the property, selected in the vineyard (they don't have a sorting table). The wine wants to be the expression of the place, not a specific plot or soil. It fermented in used 400-liter barrels, where it matured for nine months with full lees, and was kept in bottle for no less than 18 months, until it was released. It has the volume of the alluvial soils and the freshness from the year, with developed aromas and very good acidity, 12.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.32 and 6.5 grams of sugar. This is balanced, perfect for drinking and has potential to age in bottle. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2022." —Luis Gutiérrez

Tasting Profile

Peach, quince and grapefruit with white flowers and a subtle nutty note from the lees. Medium-bodied and creamy in texture, but with firm, mouthwatering acidity running through it. Dry, with a saline, mineral finish.
