Domaine Armand Rousseau's Lavaux Saint-Jacques rounds out the estate's trio of Premier Cru Gevrey — a vineyard on the northern slope of the village whose clay-limestone soils produce a wine of different character from the Clos Saint-Jacques: broader, more generous, with a darker fruit profile and slightly more structural heft. Rousseau's approach remains the same across the range: old vines, transparent winemaking, no manipulation. The 2016 vintage delivered wines of exceptional freshness and aging potential across Burgundy; this one is still years from its peak. To hold both Gevrey Premier Crus side by side — the Clos Saint-Jacques and the Lavaux — is to understand the precision of Burgundy's terroir classification.

"This is aromatically similar to the straight Gevrey villages cuvée though with much better complexity. There is also more size, weight and intensity to the stony and muscular medium weight flavors that possess a sleek mouthfeel, all wrapped in a precise, lingering and youthfully austere finale. This will also definitely need at least some time in bottle before it will be approachable."

"Healthy bright red. Enticing floral and minty high notes to the aromas of raspberry and cranberry. More imploded than the two village wines but still quite pliant and fruity, conveying an attractive restrained sweetness as well as a juicy, cool character. Captivating flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers are enlivened by underlying crushed-stone minerality. This very suave, sexy wine spreads out on the back end, finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and sneaky subtle length."

"The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques has an extremely pure bouquet with wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and subtle orange blossom aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is extremely smooth and harmonious, almost filigree tannin with wonderful poise on the understated yet paradoxically intense finish that lingers in the mouth, with a tang of orange rind on the aftertaste. This represents an outstanding Lavaux Saint-Jacques that should surpass the 2015—just glorious!" —Neal Martin

"Not that much nose. Smells transparent somehow! Racy and lively – very lifted. Cool and fresh. Undramatic but rewarding with a peacock’s tail that’s very satisfying on the end. It’s all on the end!"

More about Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils

Domaine Armand Rousseau ranks with Romanée-Conti and Leflaive—a name that's simply legendary. They own 10 vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, including an astounding 8 hectares of Grand Crus (Chambertin, Clos de Bèze) and 5.5 acres of the famed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques. Eric Rousseau obsesses over limiting yields, destemming 90% of fruit, and 18 months in barrel (restrained new oak). These are textbook Burgundy-at-its-finest wines: disciplined, transparent, profound.
