Mazy-Chambertin sits at the northern edge of the Gevrey Grand Cru hill, smaller and less celebrated than its neighbor Chambertin but capable of remarkable precision in the right hands. No hands are steadier than Rousseau's. The benchmark domaine of Gevrey-Chambertin (mentioned in the same breath as Roumier, DRC and Mugnier) farms one of the most coveted books of holdings in Burgundy, and the 2013 vintage is a textbook expression of its classical, terroir-forward house style. A cool, low-yielding year, 2013 produced wines of lifted acidity and tensile structure. Now thirteen years on, this Mazy is in its prime drinking window: kirsch and forest floor, fine-grained tannin, and the lingering Gevrey funk that signals a true Cote de Nuits Grand Cru opening up.

"There is just enough reduction present to render the nose difficult to evaluate. There is a sleek mouth feel to the attractively textured, delineated and stony big-bodied flavors that are also shaped by dense but fine tannins on the saline-inflected finish that possesses slightly better depth and length. Good stuff with fine aging potential."

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2013 Mazy-Chambertin shows slight elements of reduction, but the signatures of this site come through nicely just the same. Sweet red cherries, red currant, hard candy, flowers and mint are laced together in a soft, lighter Burgundy that should drink well with minimal cellaring as long as the reductive elements don't make it into bottle." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin, matured in second-fill barrels, has a refined bouquet that is not a million miles away from the Charmes-Chambertin at the moment, but very precise and focused. The palate is very well balanced with tensile tannins and a keen thread of acidity: vibrant and shimmering in the mouth. With plenty of energy on the finish, this is a superb Mazis-Chambertin for the vintage." —Neal Martin

Jancis Robinson

"No new oak. High toned, muscular and convincing on the nose. Lots of energy and masses of fruit Great dancing play on the palate. Very energetic indeed with no holes on the palate."

More about Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils

Domaine Armand Rousseau ranks with Romanée-Conti and Leflaive—a name that's simply legendary. They own 10 vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, including an astounding 8 hectares of Grand Crus (Chambertin, Clos de Bèze) and 5.5 acres of the famed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques. Eric Rousseau obsesses over limiting yields, destemming 90% of fruit, and 18 months in barrel (restrained new oak). These are textbook Burgundy-at-its-finest wines: disciplined, transparent, profound.

Built for the table — squab or duck breast with cherry reduction, roast venison with morels, or coq au vin. Aged hard cheeses like Comte work beautifully as a coda.

Mature kirsch and dried cherry, forest floor, dried roses and that signature Gevrey earth. Fine-grained tannins, lifted acidity, persistent mineral finish. Classical, structured, fully resolved.
