Rousseau is the benchmark of Gevrey-Chambertin, and Mazy-Chambertin — north of the more famous Chambertin proper — is among the most elegant of the village's nine Grand Crus. The 2017 vintage was warm but balanced, producing wines that felt classical even in their generosity: ripe red fruit, good acidity, accessible tannins. Now nine years on, this Mazy has shed its baby fat and is entering its first true drinking window. The Rousseau touch — earlier picking, partial whole-cluster, classical pigeage, aged in 228L pièces — gives it the perfumed lift and detail that mark this house at every level. A Grand Cru opening up beautifully, with decades still ahead.

"Deft but not invisible wood easily allows the attractively spicy aromas of wild dark berries, plum, humus and a floral nuance to be appreciated. The succulent but powerful big-bodied flavors possess slightly better mid-palate density while exhibiting excellent power and minerality on the robust, saline and very firm finale. This too has been making real quality strides over the past few years."

"The 2017 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling, floral bouquet although, there is some reduction to contend with, that will be gone by the time of bottling. But one senses that this is more brooding. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, masculine and slightly ferrous, good density towards the finish, but this will require four or five years to really soften. Maybe the Charmes has more charm? This might be more intellectual however." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Wilder and more brooding, the 2017 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru offers up notes of wild berries, dark chocolate, peonies and rich forest floor. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and supple with fine-grained, chalky tannins and persuasive energy and length." —William Kelley

"The most 'reliable' of the domaine's grands crus, according to Cyrielle Rousseau, this comes from a 55-year-old parcel and produces small berries (millerands) in the vineyard. It's always a highly perfumed wine, enhanced by a slight volatile lift in 2017, with scented oak, good focus, fine tannins and succulent wild strawberry fruit."

More about Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils

Domaine Armand Rousseau ranks with Romanée-Conti and Leflaive—a name that's simply legendary. They own 10 vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, including an astounding 8 hectares of Grand Crus (Chambertin, Clos de Bèze) and 5.5 acres of the famed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques. Eric Rousseau obsesses over limiting yields, destemming 90% of fruit, and 18 months in barrel (restrained new oak). These are textbook Burgundy-at-its-finest wines: disciplined, transparent, profound.

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck, squab with stone fruit, beef tenderloin with a pan reduction. Earthy mushroom dishes — porcini risotto, truffle pasta — match its evolving aromatics.

Tasting Profile

Ripe red cherry, raspberry and peony giving way to forest floor and gentle spice. Medium-bodied with fine, dusty tannin and a long, lifted, perfumed finish. Generous but precise.
