Orvieto, but the serious version. Barberani has worked the volcanic tufa hills above Lake Corbara since 1961, and Niccolò Barberani now farms biodynamically and organically — practices that show up in the glass as detail and quiet energy rather than weight. Castagnolo, named for a single chestnut-grove vineyard, is the estate's expression of Orvieto Classico Superiore: roughly seventy percent Grechetto with Trebbiano Procanico, fermented on native yeasts in stainless steel so the volcanic site speaks plainly. The 2024 leads with yellow apple and chamomile, opens to peach and nectarine, and threads through with a chalky mineral tension that keeps things honest. This is what Orvieto can be when someone actually cares.

Tasting Profile
