Nearly thirty years old and from one of Barolo's truly legendary vintages, this is traditionalism distilled into a bottle. Bartolo Mascarello—"one of the Last of the Mohicans"—famously refused every modernist trend: no single-vineyard bottlings, no French barriques, no fantasy names. Instead, he co-fermented Nebbiolo from four of Barolo's finest crus—Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rué, and Rocche dell'Annunziata—in a single long maceration, then aged the wine in large Slavonian oak botti. The philosophy was that no single vineyard performs equally every year, and the most balanced Barolo comes from blending. His daughter Maria Teresa has continued this approach since his passing in 2005. The 1996 vintage is textbook Barolo: structured, complex, and racy, with a cool, variable growing season redeemed by a warm, sunny harvest window that allowed full phenolic ripeness. At this age, expect layers of tar, dried roses, leather, and tobacco with a still-firm tannic backbone. This is a piece of Barolo history with years of life remaining.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 96
"From magnum, the 1996 Barolo is quite the powerhouse. Dense and potent to the core, the 1996 is packed with dark fruit, tobacco, leather, incense and dried herbs. This is an impressive showing." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

RP 88
"The 1996 Barolo reveals surprisingly high acidity in its relatively backward, tannic profile. It was closed and tough-textured when I saw it, with sour cherry, dried nut and kirsch liqueur. The wine did not develop in the glass, remaining austere and compressed." -Robert M. Parker, Jr.
