Bartolo Mascarello needs little introduction: this is the standard-bearer for traditional Barolo, made by one of the region's most revered families. The estate has bottled under its own name since 1918, and Maria Teresa Mascarello carries on her late father's uncompromising methods, blending four classic crus (Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rue, Rocche dell'Annunziata) and co-fermenting them into a single Barolo aged in large Slavonian botti. 2013 was a classical, old-school year in the Langhe: a cool, wet spring, a moderate summer and a long harvest that ran from late September into mid-October, giving wines built on acidity and tannic rigor rather than flesh. This bottle is a landmark, and it rewards patience above all, so give it several hours in a decant or lay it down for another decade.

"The 2013 Barolo (magnum) is, in my estimation, one of the wines of the evening. Deep, powerful and brooding, the 2013 offers up a kaleidoscope of aromas, flavors and textures that do not let up. Plum, rose petal, kirsch, lavender and spice lend an exotic flair throughout. Magnificent." —Antonio Galloni

"Bartolo Mascarello's 2013 Barolo is made with the estate's traditional blend of vineyard sites. This includes the San Lorenzo cru that will go offline starting with the 2015 vintage. This is a classic and traditional interpretation of Nebbiolo with an absolutely pristine and polished flavor profile. The bouquet opens to pressed violet, cassis, licorice, wild sage and cola. There is an elegant mineral imprint as well with rusty iron and iodine. This edition is evermore solid and centered compared to the warmer 2012 vintage. It will also require extra bottle aging in order to bring out its natural, but nuanced intensity." —Monica Larner

"Round and smooth, with a core of cherry surrounded by leather, licorice and underbrush flavors. Tobacco and mineral accents mingle and add complexity as this cruises to a lingering aftertaste, building to the expansive finish."

"Fragrant and loaded with finesse, this stunning red showcases Barolo’s elegant side. It opens with enticing scents of rose, violet, perfumed berry and menthol while the radiant palate delivers red cherry, cranberry, star anise and baking spice. It’s impeccably balanced, with taut silky tannins and bright acidity that lend compelling tension. Absolutely gorgeous!" —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.

Tasting Profile

Classic Nebbiolo aromatics: dried rose, sour cherry, tar, licorice and a hint of truffle. Medium-bodied, with vivid acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins, and a long savory finish. Still young.
