Bedrock built its name on hundred-year-old field blends, so it's easy to miss that they also make one of Sonoma's most honest Cabernets. The fruit comes off volcanic-soil sites in and above Sonoma Valley: roughly half from Lazy Dog in the valley's southwest corner, another large share from organically farmed blocks at the historic Bedrock Vineyard, and the rest from Montecillo and Monte Rosso high in the Mayacamas range. Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell pick at moderate sugars to keep the classic Cabernet register of cedar, pencil lead and forest floor rather than chasing sheer ripeness, ferment with native yeasts, and age about fifteen months in second- and third-fill and neutral barrels so the oak never steps in front of the fruit. The result is old-school California Cabernet, structured enough to reward five or ten years in the cellar but genuinely enjoyable tonight.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2024 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) is a juicy, vibrant wine. Dark-toned fruit, gravel, dried herbs, menthol, plum and chocolate are dialed up. This is a stellar appellation-level bottling. Then again, the fruit sources are all top-notch. Look for this to be a serious overachiever."

More about Bedrock Wine Company

Morgan Twain-Peterson founded Bedrock in 2007 to showcase ancient vines in Sonoma, and he's become obsessed with vineyard history. The flagship Bedrock Vineyard dates to 1854—founded by Union generals Sherman and Hooker, replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst. Nervo Ranch's oldest vines were planted in 1896 on brutal slopes. The Heritage is a field blend of over a dozen grapes, co-fermented in the way these mixed-age vineyards were always meant to be made. These wines are literally history in a bottle.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled ribeye or a dry-aged burger, rack of lamb with rosemary, braised short ribs, or a wedge of aged Vella dry jack.

Tasting Profile

Dark-toned and juicy: black currant, plum, gravel, dried herbs and a cool menthol lift, with cedar and pencil shavings behind. Medium to full-bodied, with firm but fine tannins, fresh acidity and a savory, herb-tinged finish.
