Kirschenmann is the vineyard that changed how people think about Lodi: 1915 plantings on the deep sands of the Mokelumne River district, bought and farmed by Tegan Passalacqua, and proof that this much-maligned appellation can produce Zinfandel of real perfume and lift rather than sheer sweetness and heft. Sand makes for smaller crops and a finer, silkier tannin than you expect from the variety, and Bedrock treats the fruit accordingly, fermenting with native yeasts and keeping new oak well out of the way. The 2014 season was warm and dry, the third year of California's drought, with an unusually early harvest producing small berries and concentrated but balanced wines. At a dozen years, this has moved into its mature, savory phase, so open it rather than cellar it further.

More about Bedrock Wine Company

Morgan Twain-Peterson founded Bedrock in 2007 to showcase ancient vines in Sonoma, and he's become obsessed with vineyard history. The flagship Bedrock Vineyard dates to 1854—founded by Union generals Sherman and Hooker, replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst. Nervo Ranch's oldest vines were planted in 1896 on brutal slopes. The Heritage is a field blend of over a dozen grapes, co-fermented in the way these mixed-age vineyards were always meant to be made. These wines are literally history in a bottle.

Perfumed raspberry and dark cherry moving toward dried fruit, with baking spice, briar and a hint of leather. Medium to full-bodied, with fresh acidity, soft sandy-soil tannins and a lifted, spiced finish.
