This is the laid-back, perfumed side of Zinfandel, from the Sierra Foothills rather than Sonoma. The fruit comes from a parcel of the old Esola vineyard in Amador County's Shenandoah Valley, a site long prized by growers who value elegance in a grape more often pushed toward power. Bedrock's approach is the same here as everywhere: native-yeast fermentation, picking before the sugars run away, and neutral-leaning barrels that keep the aromatics intact rather than layering on vanilla. What you get is a medium-bodied, red-fruited Zinfandel built on lift instead of weight. At a dozen years old this is fully mature and should be opened now.

Antonio Galloni

"An addition to the Bedrock range, the 2014 Zinfandel Sherman's Gold is wonderfully lifted and aromatic, with plenty of red and purplish-hued fruits. Delicate and understated in style, the 2014 shows the more laid back side of Zinfandel, yet there is plenty of varietal character. This is a terrific first effort from Bedrock. The Sherman's Gold emerges from a parcel in Amador County, where the wines tend to be delicate, perfumed and medium in body, as is very much the case here." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Peterson’s first single-vineyard effort from Amador County is the 2014 Zinfandel Sherman’s Gold. This vineyard he’s working with has a long history with Ridge and is called Esola. Its composition is decomposed granite over sandy loam soils. This 2014 is a perfumed and aromatic style of Zinfandel, with a medium ruby color and plenty of sweet kirsch liqueur and raspberry in its seductive, lush mouthfeel. It doesn’t appear to be one that’s going to age a long time, but it has wonderful balance, enough acidity to provide delineation, and is a sexy, heady, feminine stylish wine that disarms the taster. Drink it over the next 4-5 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Bedrock Wine Company

Morgan Twain-Peterson founded Bedrock in 2007 to showcase ancient vines in Sonoma, and he's become obsessed with vineyard history. The flagship Bedrock Vineyard dates to 1854—founded by Union generals Sherman and Hooker, replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst. Nervo Ranch's oldest vines were planted in 1896 on brutal slopes. The Heritage is a field blend of over a dozen grapes, co-fermented in the way these mixed-age vineyards were always meant to be made. These wines are literally history in a bottle.
