A serious dry red made 100 meters from the Black Sea, in a Ukraine still very much at war, is reason enough to pay attention. Beykush farms in the village of Chornomorka, in the Mykolaiv region, and Artania is their most ambitious red: a blend built around Merlot and Tempranillo, rounded out with Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a splash of the rare Bulgarian crossing Rubin. The grapes are hand-picked in mid-October at full ripeness, and each variety is fermented and aged separately in French and American oak before the final blend is composed. It's fruit-forward and well-balanced, and it carries the salty, coastal signature of where it grows.
