Margaux's perfumed, silky style in a bottle you can actually open now, from a very good vintage. Blason d'Issan is the second wine of Chateau d'Issan, whose moated chateau is among the most photogenic in the Medoc; d'Issan has been in the Cruse family since 1945, and since 2013 the Lorenzetti family has co-owned the estate with Emmanuel Cruse continuing to run things day-to-day. Launched in 1995, Blason draws on the estate's younger parcels, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged fourteen to sixteen months in barrel with about a third new oak. 2016 was one of the great recent Left Bank years: a very wet winter and spring followed by a hot, near-drought summer and timely September rain, which gave wines with real ripeness and abundant tannin that somehow stayed fresh and fine-grained. A decade on this is open and giving, and it will hold comfortably through the early 2030s.

It's full of plump fruit, with great balance and plenty of Margaux typicity - plump red and black berry fruits and high floral aromatics, an exemplary second wine. And from a yield of 55hl/ha; a great example of how (low) yields are not a necessary indicator of quality. Some menthol notes on the finish also, this is juicy and although you could drink now, it will develop further in bottle. Drinking Window 2020 - 2034."
