"Medium red. Slightly rustic aromas of plum, chestnut, leather, game and earth. Supple entry, then a bit dry and rigid in the middle palate. Could use a bit more sweetness and freshness. Finishes with slightly dry, leathery tannins. Not nearly as primary or penetrating as it appeared to be two years ago from barrel." -Stephen Tanzer

"This producer from Serralunga d'Alba uses open-top fermenters with no new oak, preferring to age the wines in small foudres. The dark plum/ruby-colored 1996 Barolo Gabutti offers a nose of over-ripe black cherries, incense, licorice, smoke, and earth. It is monolithic, dense, and concentrated, but slightly disjointed. Hence the question mark. There is huge potential, but this wine has not yet pulled itself together." -Robert M. Parker, Jr.
