A twenty-plus-year-old Ribera del Duero from the end of the valley almost nobody talks about. Soria is the highest, coldest stretch of the appellation - vineyards above 850 meters, where Tempranillo ripens slowly and hangs onto its acidity - and Bodegas Valdevinas has worked there since the Mirat family founded it in 1999. This Seleccion is all Tempranillo, aged over a year in French oak and then left alone in bottle for years before it was ever released. Two decades on, the fruit has gone from black to dried, and leather, tobacco and sweet spice have moved in. This is not a bottle to age further. It is a bottle to open.
