A twenty-plus-year-old Tempranillo from the coldest, highest corner of the Duero valley, an end of the region almost nobody talks about. The Mirat family, French by origin and Spanish for generations, set up Bodegas Valdevinas at Langa de Duero in Soria province at the end of the 1990s, farming sandy-loam and gravelly soils with limestone patches at altitudes where Tempranillo ripens slowly and holds onto its acidity. The Seleccion is all Tempranillo, aged over a year in French oak and then left alone in bottle for years before release. Two decades on, the fruit has gone from black to dried, and leather, tobacco and sweet spice have moved in. This is not a bottle to age further; it is a bottle to open, and it is worth standing it upright for a day and decanting off any sediment.
