Trollinger is the local light red of Württemberg — the same grape that crosses the Alps as Schiava in South Tyrol and Alto Adige. Jochen Beurer is one of the region's most revered producers: a biodynamic estate in Swabia, Demeter-certified since 2012, with a reputation that runs from Trollinger up through Riesling and back again. The vines were planted in the mid-1970s, farmed biodynamically, hand-harvested, and fermented in old wooden barrels. The result is everything a great light red should be — brambly berry fruit, crunchy acidity, low alcohol, and just enough spice to keep it interesting. Lightly chilled, it's one of the most quietly serious patio reds on the shelf, and a reminder that southern Germany makes more than just Riesling.

Flatiron's Take

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lightly chilled with pretzels and mustard, grilled bratwurst, or schnitzel. Also great with pizza margherita, herbed roast chicken, or a board of speck and alpine cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied, juicy, lively. Brambly raspberry, red currant, and tart cherry with a dusting of white pepper and dried herbs. Crunchy acidity, almost no tannin, and a clean, low-alcohol finish that begs for another glass.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
