Cannubi is Barolo's most legendary cru — sandy-limestone soils, a horseshoe of a hill, often called the Romanee-Conti of the Langhe for its perfume and elegance. Brezza has farmed here since the late 1800s, and by 1999 Enzo Brezza (godson and protege of the late Bartolo Mascarello) was a decade into his run as head winemaker. Long macerations, Slavonian botti, zero shortcuts — the house style at its most uncompromising. The 1999 vintage was a great classical Barolo year: structured, perfumed, built for the long haul. Twenty-six years on, this is fully resolved, drinking from the heart of its window — the kind of mature Barolo where you pour, wait, and let the room change.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The 1999 Barolo Cannubi emerges from the glass with tobacco, earthiness, cedar, autumn leaves, cinnamon, nutmeg and dried cherries. Despite its considerable richness and body, the aromas and flavors are quite forward. It’s hard to see any real upside from cellaring the 1999 any further. The tannins remain quite firm, but I would be careful about opening the 1999 too far in advance, as the wine starts to fade quickly in the glass." —Antonio Galloni

More about Brezza

While we are fortunate that the fashion for big & bold, flashy & opulent has seen its day in Barolo, that doesn't mean that every traditionally made Barolo manages to achieve the harmony and elegance that we seek—but Brezza delivers.

The wines from this address have always been good, but they've become truly fine in recent years. Enzo is the driving force behind the huge step up in quality that this old estate has taken in the past decade or so, as well as their conversion to organic viticulture. He makes unfailingly honest and delicate wines of purpose.

Brezza's wines are all from hand-harvested estate fruit and are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Baroli are aged in 3,000L untoasted Slavonian oak botti. None of the wines are fined or filtered. The results are classic beauties of red fruit and charm.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised short ribs, agnolotti del plin in butter and sage, or a porcini risotto finished with Parmigiano. Aged Robiola or a young Castelmagno closes things gracefully.

Tasting Profile

Faded rose, dried cherry, sweet tobacco, and that wet-stone perfume Cannubi is famous for. The palate is silken, fully resolved, with feather-light tannins and a long, savory, almost ethereal finish.
