A white field blend grown 720 meters up a granite mountain shot through with quartz — about as far from flat, sun-baked Alentejo as Portugal gets. João Afonso started Cabeças do Reguengo in 2009 on an abandoned farm in Portalegre, high in the Serra de São Mamede near the Spanish border, where old vines grow low and gnarled among olive, fruit and cork trees and every row is worked by hand, organically and biodynamically. The grapes for Quartzo come from a single vineyard and are picked and co-fermented together, then rest in used barrels with a little lees stirring — enough to build texture, not enough to leave any oak flavor behind. If you are the sort of drinker who chases acidity, minerality and texture rather than fruit and vanilla, this is your bottle. Serve it cool rather than cold, in a proper glass.

João Afonso, a ballet dancer turned winemaker, stumbled into Portalegre in 2009 intending to collect old vine cuttings but instead stayed to protect and restore them. Cabeças do Reguengo is now one of the region's most exciting organic and biodynamic producers, working field-blend mixed varieties the traditional way—spontaneous fermentation, minimal additions. Hard to imagine on a wine-centric continent like Europe there are still undiscovered regions where someone can make genuinely original wine. This is one of those places, and Afonso is exactly the person to do it.

Tasting Profile

Dry and taut rather than fruity: citrus pith, dried herbs, beeswax and a dusty, stony minerality. Medium-bodied with real lees-built texture and firm, mouthwatering acidity. Long and faintly saline.
