Cavallotto is one of the most respected names in Barolo, known for their commitment to traditional winemaking and a focus on highlighting the terroir of their famed vineyards. Bricco Boschis, one of the top crus of Castiglione Falletto, produces Barolo with power and finesse, and the 2020 vintage is a prime example of the vineyard’s potential.

The wine opens with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, rose petals, and hints of earthy tobacco and dried herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied with fine, structured tannins that provide depth and a firm backbone, yet the wine retains a silky texture. The acidity is bright and vibrant, balancing the richness of the fruit. The finish is long, with lingering notes of spice, mineral depth, and a subtle floral lift.

This wine will continue to evolve beautifully for the next 10–20 years, but can also be enjoyed now with a decant. Perfect with braised meats, truffle dishes, or aged cheeses, Cavallotto’s 2020 “Bricco Boschis” is a stunning Barolo that exemplifies the best of the Langhe.

The village of Castiglione Falletto is rich with superstars—Giuseppe Mascarello, Brovia, Vietti, Scavino—and Cavallotto stands easily with the best of them. Of this elite group, Cavallotto's wines stand out for their deep fruit, brooding structure, rose petal aromatics, and incredible longevity.

Most of Cavallotto's grapes come from a hill called Bricco Boschis. Cavallotto owns all of it. Thanks to a mostly southern exposure at high altitude and a complex mix of limestone and clay, it's considered one of the top crus of a village known for many great crus. Cavallotto's San Giuseppe Riserva is made from the best grapes from the vineyard's oldest vines, mid-slope.

Cavallotto's other Riserva comes from Vignolo. It is next door to Bricco Boschis and just a little lower down the slope. The wine tends to be less powerful and more floral, and is perfect for drinking on a slightly earlier timescale than the San Giuseppe.

Professional Reviews

Decanter

D 94
"Full of details of prunes, stony salinity, earthy notes and forest floor, tannins firm and slightly sticky on the gums, but with crisp acidity. It's almost austere on the finish, but dynamic and balanced nonetheless, leaving room for a refreshing hint of menthol. An old-fashioned wine, perhaps even a bit funky, but sumptuously complex."
