Corton is the Cote de Beaune's only red Grand Cru, and the broadest, most muscular thing the hill produces. Charles Van Canneyt has run Domaine Hudelot-Noellat in Vosne-Romanee since 2008 and launched his own micro-negociant label in 2012, buying tiny lots from top sites and vinifying them himself in a deliberately classical style: modest extraction, sensible oak, clarity ahead of power. The Corton hill is a limestone-and-marl amphitheatre of about 91 hectares spread across Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses, with vines sitting between 250 and 330 meters on reddish, pebbly soils. 2019 was hot and dry with a small crop, giving concentrated Pinot Noir that held on to more acidity than that summer would suggest. Seven years in, this is still gathering itself rather than opening up. Decant it an hour ahead, or better, leave it another five years.
