Chartogne-Taillet, Champagne Extra Brut "Sainte Anne", NV [2022]

Chartogne-Taillet’s “Sainte Anne” is one of those bottles that reminds you why grower Champagne is so compelling. It’s a non-vintage cuvée, yes—but it’s made with the same attention to detail and vineyard expression as their single-parcel bottlings.

Named after the patron saint of Merfy (their home village in the Montagne de Reims), Sainte Anne blends mostly Pinot Noir with Chardonnay, sourced from estate-grown vines farmed organically and often plowed by horse. The base wine is fermented with native yeasts, and it’s bottled with low or no dosage, depending on the vintage.

In the glass, it’s bright and brisk, with ripe orchard fruit, chalky minerality, and just a whisper of toast and spice. There’s enough weight for richer pairings, but the focus is all on balance and energy.

Perfect with oysters, triple cream cheeses, fried snacks—or just poured generously on a good night with better company.

"The NV (2019) Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne is fabulous. Rich, ample and layered, the Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne hits all the right notes. I especially admire its vinous intensity and overall resonance. Dried pear, flowers mint, white pepper and lemon confit are some of the many notes that grace this exquisite Champagne from Alexandre Chartogne. It's great to see this bottling - one of my perennial favorites - bounce back from a lackluster showing last year. Best of all, Cuvée Ste.-Anne remains an exceptional value in the world of fine grower Champagne." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Based on the 2018 vintage and disgorged in March 2021 with five grams per liter dosage, Chartogne's newly released NV Brut Sainte Anne reveals inviting aromas of pear, white peach, fresh bread and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, it's seamless and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit, lively acids and a pillowy mousse. It's a lovely wine that wears its heart on its sleeve." —William Kelley

Wine Spectator

92 points

"A distinctive Champagne, high-toned and floral with its cherry blossom and spice aromatics accenting the steeped raspberry, orange peel and salted almond flavors. Finely textured, like raw silk on the palate, this is bright and mouthwatering on the lingering finish." —Alison Napjus

Wine Enthusiast

"This is the basic nonvintage cuvée from Chartogne-Taillet and the only (slight) disappointment in an otherwise great range. The wine has a yeasty character, with apples and white fruits with toast coming through at the end. But unbalanced sweetness from the dosage was apparent in this bottling—maybe if it is kept it will improve." —Roger Voss

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
