Chateauneuf terroir on the wrong side of a motorway. Coudoulet's thirty hectares sit directly across the A7 from Chateau de Beaucastel, on the same Miocene molasse seabed under the same coat of galets roules, the big rolled pebbles that soak up heat all day and hand it back at night, but a few hundred metres outside the Chateauneuf-du-Pape boundary, so it goes out as Cotes-du-Rhone. Same family, same cellar, same organic farming the Perrins have practiced here since the 1950s, and the same unusually high share of Mourvedre: 2022 is 40% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault, each variety picked and vinified separately, macerated in concrete, then blended and aged about six months in foudre. The year was hot and dry until August rains reset it, and the wine came out dark and juicy, with velvety tannins and more freshness than that summer would suggest. Open it now alongside something off the grill, or leave it a decade.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Ripe raspberry, pressed violets, licorice and dried herbs compose the multifaceted aromatic profile of the 2022 Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel. Shaped gently by soft tannins, this refined red contains solid substance and caps off with persistence on the classic finish. Give it another two years to start revealing its full potential." —Nicolas Greinacher

Robert Parker

91 points

"A blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% Cinsault, the 2022 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel exhales a delicate, perfumed bouquet of black cherries, spices, violets and spring flowers. It’s medium to full-bodied, enveloping and layered with a juicy core of fruit, a tense mid-palate and a fresh, ethereal finish. This is a consistent wine and a solid value." —Yohan Castaing

Jancis Robinson

"Cask sample. Reduced and introverted nose. The palate is sleek and rounded, with fine-grained tannins, blue fruit, violet notes and a floral character. Tight and tense and well balanced – meaty as well on the long finish." —Alistair Cooper MW

Decanter

92 points

"Dark in colour. Soft, juicy, velvety tannins. An approachable and well-balanced vintage of Coudoulet that should age well thanks to its tannic finesse, acidity and freshness. Though it is quite a tannic vintage, so give it some time."
