Moulis is the Médoc appellation nobody talks about and Chasse-Spleen has long been its leading estate, farming deep gravel over clay and chalk on the Grand Poujeaux plateau. The name comes from a visitor's line about chasing away the blues — the estate credits either Lord Byron or Baudelaire, depending on who is telling it — and it has been doing exactly that for a long time. The blend is roughly half Cabernet Sauvignon and a bit under half Merlot, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. 2001 has always been the Médoc's underrated vintage, cooler and more classically proportioned than the celebrated 2000 alongside it, which is precisely why these wines have aged so gracefully: freshness rather than muscle. At twenty-five years this is fully mature and needs no patience at all. Stand it up a day ahead and decant off the sediment.

Tasting Profile

Cedar, smoke, blackcurrant and dried berry, with forest floor and a faint saline note. Medium-bodied and linear, with fresh acidity holding it together and tannins that have gone fine and soft. Persistent, savory finish.
