2001 remains one of the greatest Sauternes vintages in memory—and for good reason. This vintage balanced the concentration Sauternes demands with the freshness that separates exceptional bottles from cloying ones. Coutet, a First Growth since 1855 and the largest vineyard in Barsac at 38.5 hectares, produced a wine that's rich yet structured, with moderate sweetness and the kind of acidity that keeps you coming back. Seventy-five percent Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, fermented and aged in French oak. Now over two decades in bottle, this is Barsac's signature elegance at its peak.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"From one of the few remaining bottles at the estate (unbelievably!), the 2001 Coutet has a generous bouquet with yellow plum, Seville oranges, white peach, chai and orange blossom. The palate is viscous on the entry, more so than the 1996. It's concentrated with good depth and weight. Maybe it could benefit from a little more acidity and nerve on the finish? But this represents a fine Coutet nonetheless, just pipped by the 1996. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate." —Neal Martin
