Real right-bank Bordeaux, hand-farmed, at a price that makes it a weeknight bottle rather than an occasion one. Gonzague Maurice works ten hectares by hand on the hillside above the old commune of Parsac — the only estate up there — on clay-limestone with faint traces of iron, inside the Montagne Saint-Emilion appellation. He's farmed organically since 2010 but dropped the certification, deciding the cost and paperwork didn't make sense on wines priced like these; grass is sown between the rows and ploughing alternates row by row. Merlot still dominates the plantings, though as the climate warms Maurice has been putting in more of the later-ripening Cabernet Franc for freshness and lift in hot years. Everything is sorted twice, fermented in small concrete tanks and aged in a mix of tank and one-to-two-year-old barrels — nothing new, the point being to keep the fruit intact rather than dress it up in oak. One charming detail: the carving on the label is copied from an 18th-century tower standing in the middle of the vineyard, showing a pilgrim on the road to Santiago de Compostela.

Tasting Profile
