2005 handed Barsac one of its great modern botrytis vintages: a drought summer, then just enough rain in early September to set clean noble rot, followed by weeks of morning fog and afternoon sun. Doisy-Daene is a Second Growth of Barsac, the cooler limestone enclave inside Sauternes, and has been in the Dubourdieu family since 1924, a name synonymous with brilliant white winemaking in Bordeaux. This is the classic sweet bottling, a Semillon-led blend with a little Sauvignon Blanc, grown on the clay-limestone plateau of upper Barsac and fermented and aged in barrel; the 2005 was made by Denis Dubourdieu, the Bordeaux oenology professor who did more than anyone to modernize the region's whites. Two decades on it is rich and concentrated but still bright, the low pH of the vintage keeping Barsac's signature acidity front and center while the first savory, nutty notes of maturity arrive. Half-bottles move faster than 750s, which is the point here: this one is right where you want it. Serve it properly cold and don't decant too far ahead.

Antonio Galloni

"Good full, bright yellow. Honey and marzipan on the rather stunted nose. Then supersweet, dense and tactile, but with the ripe pineapple and marzipan flavors currently muted by sulfur dioxide. Shows the power of the vintage but will need time to express itself." —Stephen Tanzer

Jancis Robinson

"Sweet and round. Very flattering and charming. Lovely texture and freshness. Quite delicate and certainly wonderfully appetising. One of the few 2005s that could be served before a meal??? Long, neat. Not as full and sweet as some but very well judged. No enormous weight of sugar but very zesty." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

"This is fantastic, with masses of sweet fruit. Passion fruit, caramel and apple--this has it all. Full and sweet. Extremely serious for this estate."

More about Chateau Doisy Daene

Sauternes with personality. The Dubourdieu family has owned this 18.2-hectare Barsac since 1924, making both rich sweet wines and—innovatively—a dry white. 65% new French oak, indigenous yeast, complexity for years. A thinking person's Sauternes.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roquefort and other blue cheeses, foie gras terrine, almond and apricot tart, salted caramel desserts, or simply on its own after dinner.

Tasting Profile

Sweet and concentrated without being heavy. Dried apricot, honey, candied orange and quince, with the first nutty, savory notes of age. Bright acidity cuts the sweetness; long, clean finish.
