Gazin's neighbors tell you most of what you need to know: Petrus lies immediately to the west, l'Evangile to the south, and in 1969 the estate sold 5.5 hectares of its land to Petrus to settle a tax bill. What remains is still one of Pomerol's larger holdings, about 23.5 hectares under vine on the northeast of the plateau, gravel over clay, sand and iron, with a core of the blue clay that gives Pomerol Merlot its density. The blend runs around 90% Merlot with the balance in Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc; the Bailliencourt family has owned the property since 1946, and Nicolas de Bailliencourt, who took charge in 1990, ended machine harvesting and cut yields. Fermentation is in 27 small cement vats, malolactic happens in barrel, and the wine spends 18 months in French oak, roughly half of it new. 2010 was one of the great structured Bordeaux vintages, and at sixteen years this is just moving into its window: still deep and firm, but the plum, truffle and spice-box side has come out. Give it a decant.

Robert Parker

96 points

"Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Gazin charges out of the gate with bold boysenberries, baked plums and Christmas cake notes plus hints of unsmoked cigars and bouquet garni. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with baked black fruit, framed by firm, ambitious tannins, finishing long and mineral tinged." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Dense, with a dark, smoldering feel as charcoal and coffee weave around a core of mulled fig, blackberry and boysenberry fruit. The long, muscular finish features singed iron and black tea notes for added range. Needs a little time, but should unfurl nicely. Best from 2015 through 2030."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"Rich fruit currants and berries, intensely juicy, packed with dark very ripe fruit. A powerhouse of berries." —Roger Voss

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck, braised short ribs, mushroom and truffle pasta, squab, veal with morels, or a well-aged Comte.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and deep. Plum, black cherry and cassis with truffle, earth, spice box and cedar. Ripe, fine-grained tannins still firm, fresh acidity, and a long savory finish.
