Thirty-two years is exactly what a firm, classically built 1994 needed. Gruaud-Larose is one of the five 2nd Growths of the 1855 Saint-Julien classification, an estate of more than 80 hectares on deep gravel soils, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant in the classical style of the commune, vinified parcel by parcel and aged in French oak. 1994 was a rain-hit year on the Left Bank: a promising summer undone by a soaking September, which produced wines that were austere and tightly wound in youth. Gruaud's deep gravel and firm frame were well suited to that kind of vintage, and time has done the rest, resolving the tannins and moving the wine into its cedar, tobacco and dried-herb tertiary phase. (The Merlaut family bought the estate in 1997, so this bottle predates their tenure.) Fully mature: decant gently off the sediment and drink it the same evening.

Robert Parker

82 points

"The 1994 performed better prior to bottling. It appears to have dropped much of its mid-palate sweetness and fatness, tastes greener than my cask-tasting notes suggested, and finishes with a searing degree of harsh, bitter tannin. Perhaps I caught it in a dormant, unflattering state of evolution, but it is currently revealing less ripeness, fruit, and texture. This wine's future is suspect as the wine lacks harmony." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rack of lamb, roast beef with potatoes, venison, dry-aged steak, duck a l'orange, or a Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Aged hard cheeses too.

Tasting Profile

Cedar, graphite, cigar box and dried herb over a core of cassis, black cherry and dried plum. Mid-weight, with fully resolved tannins, lifted acidity and a savory, lingering finish.
