2013 is the vintage red Bordeaux would rather forget, and the one Sauternes quietly got right. A cold, wet spring and a rainy September made life miserable for the Cabernet growers, but noble rot arrived cleanly in early October and the estates willing to pick over and over in short windows made lovely wine: lower in sugar than the blockbuster years, around thirteen percent alcohol, built on freshness and cut rather than sheer weight. That suits Guiraud, which was the first Premier Cru Classe in Bordeaux to earn organic certification, in 2011, and which carries an unusually high proportion of Sauvignon Blanc alongside Semillon for exactly that aromatic lift. The half bottle is the honest format here: enough for two people at the end of a meal, with no leftover bottle guilting you from the fridge for a week. Serve it properly cold, around 50 degrees, and drink it over the next several years while its energy is the point.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2013 Guiraud offers caramelized pear, peach and tinned pineapple on the nose, nicely focused with a floral element emerging with time. The palate is balanced with a tang of marmalade and candied orange peel. There is plenty of attack here, though compared to other Sauternes in this vintage, it is just missing some length on the aftertaste." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2013 Guiraud has a generous bouquet of rich honeyed fruit interlaced with quince and hints of marmalade, though I would like to see more mineralite and tension by the time of bottling. The palate is well-balanced with a spice-tinged entry, touches of Seville orange and mandarin emerging with time. There is good depth here, fine density with plenty of sinew toward the saline-tinged finish." —Neal Martin

"Rich, exotic fruit character. Apricot, star fruit, peach. Reminds me a bit of those rare botrytised Viogniers – in a good way. Lovely, lovely acidity. Super length and concentration. Admirable!" —Richard Hemming MW

Wine Spectator

96 points

"This gorgeous Sauternes is still really tight, with racy floral and green plum edges along the core flavors of white peach, mirabelle plum, melon and green fig, but there's stunning length, with a rapier of minerality that matches the sweetness step for step on the long, quinine-infused finish. Built for the long haul. Best from 2018 through 2038."

Wine Enthusiast

"This rich wine is still developing its spice, ginger and complex fruits. The acidity is pronounced, with a fresh character that balances the full botrytis flavors." —Roger Voss

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roquefort or Stilton with walnut bread, an apricot or almond tart that isn't too sweet, seared foie gras, or simply on its own, very cold, after dinner.

Tasting Profile

Apricot, candied citrus peel, honeysuckle and a saffron note from botrytis. Sweet but not heavy, with vivid acidity running underneath and a clean, lifted finish. Medium-bodied for Sauternes, which is its charm.
