Le Bon Pasteur in the Rolland-family era. For decades this Pomerol estate was the home base — and the calling card — of Michel Rolland, the celebrity oenologist who consulted around the world from his perch here; the family sold to Hong Kong's Goldin Financial Group in 2013, but the 1998 vintage is pure Rolland-era Bon Pasteur. And what a vintage to be: 1998 was a phenomenal year on the Right Bank, the kind that produced wines built for the long haul. Twenty-seven years on, the 1998 is fully mature, opulent in that classical Rolland-Pomerol way — dried black plum, fig, cocoa, truffle, sweet tobacco, leather, mocha — with the unctuous Merlot texture now silken and the tannins resolved. A library Pomerol drinking at its full peak. Drink over the next several years; decant briefly.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Ruby-red. Captivating aromas of raspberry, dark chocolate, mocha, game and sexy oak. Lush on entry, then rich, vinous and deep. Really wonderfully balanced and complete. Finishes with serious but even tannins and outstanding persistence. Lifted on the very back by a faint note of fresh dill." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

91 points

"The dense purple-colored 1998 boasts a beautifully rich, complex perfume of blackberries, plums, lead pencil, cherries, mocha, and caramel. Powerful and rich, with a multilayered texture, and an opulent, viscous finish revealing enough sweet tannin for definition, this is a terrific, full-bodied, seamless effort from one of the world's greatest winemakers." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

16 points

"Very dark and concentrated. Herbal, interesting but not complete. Astringent finish. But at least this has the energy to develop further." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Aromas of green olive, light raisin and spices follow through to a full body, with sweet and ripe tannins and a long, dark currant, Christmas cake aftertaste. Delicious already. And a long life ahead too."
