The classical counterweight to 2003. After the notorious heat of the year before, 2004 in the Medoc was a big, cool, late-ripening harvest that demanded ruthless selection, and Chateau Margaux made the kind of wine the estate is actually famous for: fragrant, fine-boned, built on 78% Cabernet Sauvignon from the deep gravel croupes that give the appellation its perfume, with Merlot, Petit Verdot and a trace of Cabernet Franc. It is not a blockbuster and was never meant to be; it is a First Growth in a classic register, all cedar, redcurrant and violets carried by silky tannin. Two decades on it is fully open and drinking in its sweet spot, with no rush. Stand the bottle upright a day ahead, decant off the sediment an hour before dinner, and let it be the centerpiece.

"The 2004 Château Margaux has an enticing nose with mainly red fruit and a light cedar and irony tincture. It's mature but still vigorous and has plenty in the tank. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, tensile entry. It's irony (again) with a welcome spiciness on the finish. More concentrated than you might anticipate, this is drinking beautifully now but will clearly drink for another 20 to 30 years." —Neal Martin

"An evocative nose with perfumed aromas jumping out of the glass. This balances intensity with freshness giving sour cherry, blueberry and raspberry fruit flavours alongside wet stone, salty mineral notes. There is a precision to this, it's not so weighty but more direct and focussed. Fine tannins fill the palate and this is just starting to show some of the savouriness of mature Bordeaux. A superb wine at an excellent time to drink but still with ageing potential. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend."

Tasting Profile

Redcurrant, cassis and violets over cedar, tobacco and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, tannins silky and fully resolved, acidity fresh. Extraordinarily perfumed, with a long, graceful, gently savory finish. Dry.
