Mourvedre is a grape that demands patience, and Longue Garde is Pradeaux's answer to it: a bottling drawn only from the estate's oldest Mourvedre vines, averaging around 45 years, and held considerably longer than the regular Bandol before release. The Portalis family has run this property on the edge of Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, on the Mediterranean between Marseille and Toulon, since before the French Revolution, and they farm organically and work as they always have: no destemming, hand harvest, and years in very old, very large oak foudres. That whole-cluster fermentation is why young Pradeaux is famously ferocious, and it is also why what happens to these wines with age is the whole point. 2010 was a complete vintage here, pairing real concentration with real acidity, and at sixteen years this back-vintage bottle has arrived at the good part, the tannins softened and the fruit giving way to licorice, olive, herbs and earth. Give it an hour in a decanter and put a steak or a daube in front of it.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and savory rather than fruity. Macerated plum and black currant under licorice, olive, garrigue herbs, smoked meat and earth. Ripe tannins now softened, bright acidity, and a long, earthy, mineral finish.
