The Haut-Medoc is where you still find Bordeaux that tastes like Bordeaux, without the theater. Nadine and Eric Charlassier run Prieure de Beyzac as a small family operation, farm to environmental certification, and turn out a classic left-bank blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vintage after vintage. 2018 was a warm, generous year, and it shows up here as ripe red and black fruit held in line by fine-grained tannins and a gravelly, savory finish. Several years on, the edges have softened and it's drinking beautifully now, though there's structure left for a few more. Claret, quietly doing its job.

"The 2018 Prieuré de Beyzac has a really lovely bouquet of perfumed red cherries and wild strawberry and well integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, pinpoint acidity and great precision toward the finish. This is one of the outstanding Cru Bourgeois of the vintage. Absolutely superb."
