No other Margaux estate owns vines in all five of the appellation's communes, which makes Prieure-Lichine an unusually complete portrait of what Margaux actually is. The property began as a Benedictine priory, was scattered after the Revolution, and was pieced back together starting in 1951 by Alexis Lichine, the wine merchant and writer who more or less invented Bordeaux wine tourism by putting up signs inviting visitors in. Today it runs to about 77 hectares across some 150 separate parcels of gravel, sand and clay at modest elevation, vinified plot by plot, and planted roughly half to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot close behind and a splash of Petit Verdot. The 2014 came from a season that looked doomed until a brilliantly sunny, dry September and October rescued it, ripening Cabernet on the Left Bank and giving wines of freshness and classical proportion rather than sheer power. At just over a decade old this is medium-bodied, perfumed and ready now with an hour in a decanter, though it has several more years of development ahead.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2014 Prieuré-Lichine was one of the turn up for the books, surpassing all previous showings. It has a classy bouquet with vibrant red fruit, damp loam, cedar and freshly rolled tobacco aromas. This is almost Saint-Julien in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame slightly herbaceous red fruit. It does not have immense depth or concentration, yet it comes across as harmonious and linear. A tingle of black pepper remains on the aftertaste. One of the pleasant surprises of the tasting. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting." —Neal Martin

Decanter

95 points

"The tannins here make their presence felt, but with the pliability and depth of fruit to back them up. Clearly a wine that is going to age well and develop gracefully, with plum and damson fruits, clear oak influence but well crafted, this feels primary and rippling with potential, and really stood out in the Margaux appellation horizontal tasting. This was the first year with the new cellars completed at Prieuré."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Focused, with a velvety beam of crushed plum and warm cherry notes flowing through the anise- and plum cake-accented finish. A little reliant on toast in the end, but the balance is there."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"This is a concentrated wine, packed with tannins and black plum fruits. It has some of the fruity crispness of the vintage although with its dark structure and concentration it is obviously a wine that needs to soften over time. Rich and juicy at the end, it will be ready to drink from 2024." —Roger Voss
