2001 is the vintage Sauternes drinkers hold onto: a warm, settled late summer followed by one of the driest Septembers on record, with mist-filled mornings and warm, settled afternoons - textbook noble rot weather - and the wines came in with rare concentration and aromatic lift. Rabaud-Promis is a First Growth in the 1855 Sauternes classification, farming a sloping gravel-and-clay hillside in Bommes that in places is so thick with stones it looks more like Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The blend leans hard on Semillon, about 80 percent, with Sauvignon Blanc and a splash of Muscadelle, picked in successive passes through the vineyard and aged roughly a year in French oak, a portion of it new. Twenty-five years on it has moved out of primary honey and citrus into marmalade and dried apricot, and there is no urgency about drinking it. The half bottle is the right format for sweet wine: four generous glasses after dinner without opening a full bottle. Serve well chilled.

Robert Parker

"The Rabaud-Promis has a lovely bouquet with hints of dried honey, nutmeg and crème brûlée blossoming in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening: a surfeit of botrytis here that vibrant mandarin and dried pineapple notes. There is a great sense of cohesion to this Rabaud-Promis with a long tail of spicy fruit on the finish. This is consistent with my tasting at the property in April 2012. Superb." —Neal Martin

"Tawny orange in color. Smoky grilled turmeric aromatics, the texture is supple but it has grip, and overall the dried apricot and fleshy nectarine fruits have lovely concentration that holds right through the body of the wine. Not quite as uplifting on the finish as some but the smoke character adds depth and complexity. 149g/l residual sugar, harvest September 19 to October 18."

Wine Spectator

"Brilliant yellow-gold color. Very strong aromas of tropical fruit and honey. Full-bodied, with apricot and botrytis spice character that takes off like afterburners. Fantastic."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras terrine, Roquefort and Stilton, tarte Tatin, apricot clafoutis, or salty aged cheeses at the end of a long meal.

Tasting Profile

Sweet and unctuous but lifted by fresh acidity. Orange marmalade, dried apricot, honey and candied ginger, with a toasty, nutty edge from age. Long, clean finish.
