This is the grape that nearly vanished, brought back by the man who refused to let it. Timorasso was once one of Piedmont's most planted whites, then got crowded out by easier grapes and almost disappeared entirely, until a handful of growers, led by Walter Massa and including Claudio Mariotto, committed to reviving it in the hills around Tortona. This Derthona (the old Roman name for the town, and the traditional name for the grape here) is the fresh, immediate introduction to what makes Timorasso so exciting: 100% Timorasso, dry, raised in stainless steel on its lees to keep everything bright and sapid. It's the pure, energetic entry point, delicious young. Serve well chilled, from aperitif through dinner.

More about Claudio Mariotto

Claudio Mariotto is to Timorasso what certain legendary winemakers are to their grapes: the keeper of the flame. His grandfather planted the first vines in the 1920s; Claudio inherited 60 hectares and recognized Timorasso's potential just as the variety was being resurrected from near-extinction in the 1990s. His five single-vineyard expressions—Bricco San Michele, Cavallina, Pitasso—define what this fickle white grape can achieve in Colli Tortonesi.
