Clos Rougeard’s Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 2017 is a stunning example of Cabernet Franc from one of the Loire’s most revered producers. From the Les Poyeux vineyard, known for its gravelly soils and perfect ripening conditions, this wine strikes a rare balance between power and grace. The nose is a bouquet of dark berries, with hints of graphite, herbs, and a touch of tobacco, evoking the depth and complexity of the vineyard’s terroir.

On the palate, it’s both refined and structured, with silky tannins that provide a backbone without overpowering the lively fruit. There’s a purity to the dark cherry and blackberry flavors, balanced by earthy, mineral-driven undertones that carry through to the finish. The wine’s acidity keeps everything in check, lending freshness to its otherwise rich body.

Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux 2017 is a wine for those who appreciate the elegance and longevity of a great Cabernet Franc. While it’s accessible now, its structure and complexity suggest it will evolve beautifully over the next decade or more. Perfect alongside roasted meats, mushrooms, or aged cheeses, this wine is a true collector’s gem.

here are some very famous wines that are extremely limited and inspire a cult like following; and then there is Clos Rougeard. The tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and even tinier amounts of Chenin Blanc that the Foucault brothers make in Saumur-Champigny are among the most rare and sought after bottles in France and now the U.S.

What's the trick? Well it's a bit mysterious but basically they possess very old vines on special terroir. Their yields are tiny, farming is meticulous and the cellar is deep, dank and cold. Those few of us luck enough to visit can attest to layers of mold and caverns of oak barrels with various vintages slowly fermenting or resting for years before bottling.

The wines are stunning. They can age probably forever. And they are extremely limited.

"Set for release in November 2022, the 2017 Les Poyeux is a delightful wine. While waiting for the winemaker, I was left with a glass of this in the chalky cellars and I really struggled to find anything wrong with it. This is a blend of two parcels within the Poyeux vineyard. It's as if you are drinking a cloud of Cabernet Franc, that floats along in your mouth, before the mouthwatering acidity flows forth. This light to mid-weight wine has incredible density despite its delicacy. The purity of fruit is impressive and shows red cherry, black olive, savory and tea leaf-like tannins. Typically a more accessible wine than Le Bourg, you could drink on release but it will go on and on." -Vinous
