2007 was the Southern Rhone's Grenache vintage - a dry, sun-drenched, mistral-swept year that gave Chateauneuf enormous ripeness - and nineteen years have finally tamed it. The Vieilles Vignes comes from Clos Saint Jean's oldest plots on the La Crau plateau in the eastern corner of the appellation, where fist-sized galets roules soak up the day's heat and radiate it back into low, goblet-trained vines. Brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel took over the family estate in 2002 and brought in consulting oenologist Philippe Cambie, and the wines of that era are unapologetically rich: Grenache-dominant, filled out with Syrah, Mourvedre and a handful of the appellation's older varieties. This bottle comes from a private cellar rather than the domaine, and at close to two decades the exuberant fruit has folded into leather, dried herbs and tobacco. Drink it over the next couple of years, with something substantial on the plate.

"Deep ruby. Black raspberry, smoky herbs and Asian spices on the nose. Suave and fine-grained, with deep flavors of raspberry, blackberry and tangy minerals. A step up in extract and power from the regular bottling, with more depth and intensity to its red and dark fruit flavors. Gains a floral quality on the back half, finishing sweet, broad and minerally, with dusty tannins and an echo of candied flowers." —Josh Raynolds

"The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is blockbuster stuff that has overflowing kirsch, blackberry, incense, lavender and Asian spices flowing to a sexy, full-bodied, multidimensional wine that has impeccable balance and knockout length. While I've a slight preference for the 2010, the 2007 has fabulous mid-palate density and an incredibly polished mouthfeel that's hard to resist. It too is drinking well now, but will have 15 to 20 years of overall longevity when all is said and done." —Jeb Dunnuck

"Alluring mulled spice, braised fig and red currant fruit is layered with mouthwatering maduro tobacco and bittersweet cocoa notes. Picks up a bright minerally edge on the finish. Excellent precision. Best from 2010 through 2020."
