This is the only white Clotilde Legrand makes, a small production of Chenin Blanc from a domaine otherwise given over to Cabernet Franc - and it is the kind of Saumur Blanc that reminds you how good this appellation is before the famous names get involved. Legrand works out of Varrains, in cellars dug by hand into the tuffeau, the chalky white limestone that formed under these vineyards some ninety million years ago and that gives Saumur its particular cut. She took over the family estate from her father in 2014, the first woman to run it in a line that goes back centuries, and immediately tightened the farming, keeping the cover crops between rows her father pioneered in Varrains in 1991, farming sustainably and hand harvesting in two passes so only ripe fruit comes in. The wine rests on its fine lees, which builds texture without any oak flavor getting in the way. 2022 was a hot, dry year in the Loire, so this vintage leans golden and generous while keeping the Chenin acidity that makes it work at the table.

Tasting Profile

Quince, yellow apple, honey and a chalky undertone. Medium to full-bodied with a smooth, lees-built texture and bright acidity that keeps the richness in check. Dry, faintly waxy, long.
