Cariad is Welsh for beloved, and it is Colgin's Bordeaux-blend cuvee - Cabernet Sauvignon led, filled out with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - drawn from valley-floor and hillside sites in St. Helena farmed by David Abreu, with Madrona Ranch at the core. Ann Colgin came to wine from the art world, by way of Christie's and Sotheby's, and built the estate around an unusually consistent team: Abreu in the vineyards, a small run of bottles each year, and a winery on the northern end of Pritchard Hill looking down at Lake Hennessey. This bottle comes from a private collection rather than the winery, and at close to two decades old it has moved well past its early-life richness into the savory, secondary territory that makes Napa Cabernet of this caliber worth cellaring in the first place. It is full-bodied and generous - 15.6% alcohol - so pour it with food and give it time. Decant an hour or two before serving.

Antonio Galloni

98 points

"The 2009 Cariad Red Wine is a blend of fruit sourced from Thorevilos and Madrona Ranch in St. Helena. It is deep, sensual and beautifully balanced in its dark black fruit, menthol, spices and licorice. This is a much firmer and more structured wine than the Tychson Hill. It doesn't have that wine's sheer early appeal, but it does have the structure to age gracefully for years. Smoke, savory herbs and licorice are some of the notes that frame the explosive finish." —Vinous

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2009 Proprietary Red Cariad is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. This full-bodied red reveals slightly more forest floor, menthol, bouquet garni, espresso roast, blackberry and black currant characteristics as well as more tannin than the Tychson Hill. It comes across like an elegant hybrid blend of a rich Bordeaux-styled wine from Napa Valley with a focused, structured, French sensitivity." —Robert Parker

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dry-aged ribeye, rack of lamb, or short ribs braised in red wine. Rich enough for a mushroom and truffle risotto and for hard aged cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Cassis and dark plum, now overlaid with cedar, tobacco leaf, dried herbs and a little forest floor. Full-bodied and deeply textured, with tannins that have turned velvety and enough acidity to keep it lively. Long, warm, layered finish.
