A fully mature Cote de Beaune 1er Cru from the estate behind Pommard's Clos des Epeneaux, out of Auxey-Duresses, the village most Burgundy shoppers walk right past. Comte Armand's Auxey 1er Cru comes off just over a hectare in two parcels: south-facing Les Breterins on limestone and Les Duresses on brown clay, with some vines planted back in 1920. The farming is certified organic with biodynamic work, and the winemaking is old-school and gentle: fruit fully destemmed but not crushed, native-yeast fermentation in wooden vats, eighteen months in barrel with about a quarter new oak. 2009 was a warm, generous vintage in the Cote de Beaune, and seventeen years on the fruit has settled into the savory, forest-floor register that is the whole reason people cellar Burgundy. This is a back-vintage bottle drinking in its window right now.

The jewel in the crown of Comte Armand is the 13 acre premier cru monopole vineyard Clos des Epéneaux vineyard of Pommard. The vineyard and other bottlings from Volnay and Auxey-Duresses are farmed biodynamically. The wines are assertive and incredibly ageworthy.
