The jewel in the crown of Comte Armand is the 13 acre premier cru monopole vineyard Clos des Epéneaux vineyard of Pommard. The vineyard and other bottlings from Volnay and Auxey-Duresses are farmed biodynamically. The wines are assertive and incredibly ageworthy.

"This is evolving somewhat more slowly than I originally foresaw because while there is some secondary development to the earthy dark berry fruit aromas trimmed in just enough wood to notice, there is enough primary character remaining to suggest that this is still several years away from its peak. There is fine concentration and volume to the mouth coating and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess impressive depth and length. This is not a particularly refined vintage for this wine but I like the sleek muscularity and power on the lingering finish. Lovely stuff and very much still on the way up."

"Bright medium red, with little sign of amber. Expressive aromas of redcurrant, cinnamon, mocha, leather and earth, with complicating ferrous notes of iron and tobacco. Wonderfully silky and fine-grained, showing lovely class and lift to its red fruit and spice flavors. Not a powerhouse but remarkably suave and smooth for Pommard. Really rises and lingers on the highly aromatic finish. Still on an upswing." -Vinous

Robert Parker

"The 2002 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux does not quite match the previous vintage. It has a stern, earthy, tobacco-scented bouquet with touches of small dark cherries and potpourri, followed by a scent of iodine. The palate is sweet on the entry with well-judged acidity and comes across as quite feminine, a trait more evident in subsequent vintages. It feels natural and concludes with a delicate touch of spice that lingers in the mouth. This is very fine."

Jancis Robinson

"Very dark and initially quite tough and earthy. Very slightly sour at the moment; just a little dank. It then opened out in the glass to become pungent and seductive with some violets and real breadth."
