Bardolino is Lake Garda's answer to Beaujolais: a light, peppery red built for a slight chill and a big glass. Le Fontane is Corte Gardoni's everyday bottling, roughly 60% Corvina with Rondinella from vines between 15 and 50 years old, grown on glacial moraine soils just southeast of the lake. Gianni Piccoli bought the property in 1971 and started bottling under his own label in 1980, resisting the local push to tear out native grapes in favor of French ones; his three sons run it now, with Mattia in the cellar, Stefano in the vineyards and Andrea on the commercial side. There is no oak here at all, just a few months in stainless steel before bottling, which keeps the fruit crunchy and the alcohol down around 12%. Pull it out of the fridge in July and it does everything a summer red should.

The Piccoli family has been farming near Lake Garda since 1971, and they've always been growers first, vintners second. Gianni Piccoli broke ties with the cooperatives in 1980 and started bottling his own wine. Now his three sons—Mattia in the cellar, Stefano in the vineyard, Andrea on commercialization—run it with the same quiet confidence that comes from knowing your land forever.
