Fifty years in cask before anyone put it in a bottle. This 1976 vintage Sercial spent its entire life in oak under the canteiro system, casks warmed by the sun in the lofts above Funchal, and was finally bottled in 2026, a release of 853 bottles. Sercial is the driest and highest-acid of Madeira's noble grapes, and this one comes from Jardim da Serra, high in the hills behind Funchal; whatever residual sugar the wine carries is swallowed whole by 9.6 grams of acidity, so it reads taut and citrusy rather than rich, even at 21% alcohol. Cossart Gordon has been shipping Madeira since 1745, and a vintage bottling of this age is effectively indestructible: it will hold for months once opened and for decades if you leave it alone.

"The 1976 Sercial, a special release to celebrate the 250th anniversary of US independence, was aged in the "canteiro" system in oak casks at room temperature for almost 50 years. It's clear, crystalline and bright, with a golden topaz hue and golden reflections. It has an herbal nose with notes of yellow fruit and salted almonds. It comes in at 21% alcohol, with a pH of 3.15 and 65 grams of sugar. The palate is vibrant, with pungent acidity and a bittersweet twist in the finish. Only 192 bottles produced. Tasting Profile

Golden topaz in the glass. Citrus marmalade, dried orange peel, toasted nuts and spice, with tobacco and brandy on the back end. Medium-bodied, searing acidity, dry-tasting and enormously long.
