Les Genêts comes from sandy-silt soils in Savennières—lighter and earlier-drinking than Damien Laureau's other cuvées, though "earlier-drinking" in Savennières still means years of potential. About 750 cases produced. Certified organic since 2012, indigenous yeast, separate vinifications by terroir to preserve soil expression. The 2019 has had time to open up; Savennières Chenin often needs it. Damien's grandfather-farmer instincts meet Loire tradition here—wines of place, not intervention.

"The grapes for Damien Laureau's 2019 Les Genêts are grown on sandy soils over schist, giving a tenderness and richness of fruit. Matured on lees in barrels for 12 months, there's no mistaking the nutty, smoky influence of the oak over bruised apple fruit, rounding out the palate. It finishes well, offering sinew and structure, tidying and tightening up the palate. There's no mistaking the hand of the winemaker, which is evident at this stage but its schistose foundations provide the drive and frame in which this will age." —Rebecca Gibb MW

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
