A high-altitude family plot that spent its first decades being too cold, until the climate came to meet it. The Louis Auguste vines sit above the Cote de Nuits near Chevannes, in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits, on the same limestone-and-marl mix as the famous slope below but distinctly cooler, facing due south. In a warm, dry year like 2005 that altitude became pure advantage, and the vintage's combination of firm tannin and unusually high acidity is exactly what carries a wine two decades. This is a back-vintage bottle from an early chapter of David Duband's career, before he took on Jacky Truchot's old vines and shifted to the low-oak, whole-cluster style the domaine is known for now. Twenty years on, the fruit has settled into the savory, earthy register that makes mature Burgundy worth the wait; drink it over the next few years.
