Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Almost colourless. Almost stinky, it’s so mineral-driven on the nose! But on the palate it’s much broader and friendlier. Very fine satin texture with a freshness and obvious ageability that recalls Rafa Palacios’s Godellos." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

93 points

"A creamy, broad-shouldered white, with well-meshed, lively acidity carrying flavors of creamed pear, crushed hazelnut, star fruit and pickled ginger as they expand on the palate, ending with a smoke-tinged finish. Drink now through 2028."

More about David & Nadia

David and Nadia Sadie are young oenologists working old, low-yielding Swartland vineyards with the kind of care that feels almost obsessive. Both trained in viticulture and enology, they made their first wine together in 2010 on the Paardebosch farm. Chenin Blanc, Grenache, and blends that taste like the vineyard, not the winemaker's philosophy. Single-vineyard sites capturing different soil types. This is the future of South African wine.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

100% Chenin BlancVery shallow shale soils in the Paardeberg, being an anomaly as the mountain is granite drivenPlanted on the Paardebosch farm and being very much exposed to the sun, nature and its elements as its planted on a “kop”. Hill of shale if the name is translated directlyDavid & Nadia have been farming this parcel since winter 2013 and this vineyard keeps on surprising them with its “lateral” tension, and broadness, a contrast to its neighboring vineyards planted in pure graniteHarvested at end of January/early February, over four picking datesThe wines of the different pickings were aged separately, before blending and then bottling at the end of the yearThe 2020 is the first vintage qualifying for the Certified Heritage Vineyards (CHV) seal and forms part of the Old Vine Project
